Learning to Learn / Thinking

Learning how to learn is all about the children reflecting on their learning, knowing what they are learning, where to next and how to get there!  Sounds tricky? NO!  The children should all be able to tell you their reading level, maths stage and writing stage.  We are currently working on talking about next learning steps, and goals towards these steps.  There needs to be a big emphasis on home and school links with lots of talking about how you as whanau can help at home.  More on this as the term continues.  Watch this page for EXCELLENT examples of children reflecting and assessing their own work.

THE 3 WHY'S - A THINKERS KEY CARD.

I read the children this statement : WE HAVE TO COME TO SCHOOL and then asked them Why is that? With their reply I asked them again Why is that? and with that reply I again asked Why is that?  This proved to be a great way of getting them to go deeper with their thinking and explanations.  It was extremely interesting!  Here are some of the replies....

We have to learn, because if we don't we won't get a job, because we won't know anything.

To fill our head with ideas, so that we can read and write, so that when we get to college we will know what to do.

To learn how to do reading, so we can learn and do

OUR SUCCESS-O-METER

The children will ask themselves these questions when reflecting on a piece of work ....

Did I persist?
Did I strive for EXCELLENCE and ACCURACY?
Did I meet my learning intention? How do I know this?
Can I tell my teacher what I need to work on for tomorrow?
